FUNKY FEET FRIDAY

I have no idea who these feet belong to. Do you?

Thank you for supporting our Funky Feet Friday!
Walking, scootering and biking to and from school is a great way to include daily physical activity into your children’s lives, and support us to be a Travelwise School. A bonus is that this also helps to reduce traffic chaos at the school gate, which is very important for everyone's safety.

Kelly Sports Fun Fitness

Today it was  our turn to take part in the Kelly Sports Fun Fitness taster session. It was definitely fun!  We learned a few new games we can play as a class as part of our Fitness. They were Catch The Train, In The Pond, Whanau Whanau and Popcorn. Here are a few photos from the session.

Learning About Sound

This afternoon we carried out some investigations about sound. Here is what we did:

1. We played different instruments and worked out how they made their own unique sounds.

2. We made telephones using paper cups and string. They actually work if you keep the string tight.

3. We stretched rubber bands across plastic containers and used glue sticks to create a bridge. By moving the glue stick we created different pitches.

4. We filled containers with different objects to see which made the best shakers.

5. We attached rulers to a piece of string and whirled them around to create a sound similar to the pererehua pictured below.

We also learned about Los Reciclados de Cateura, a community in Paraguay who created instruments from rubbish.
On Friday we will be creating our own instruments out of trash we will be bringing in from home.

Happenings

My gosh! Time is flying!
I have finally managed to take photos of our frangipani art from Samoan Language Week.

Luka brought in a car, powered by a balloon, that he had built at home. It travelled quite a long way across the room.

Xavier shared his magic blanket with us. I wish I had one then I wouldn't have to choose what to wear every morning.

HOME LEARNING THIS TERM

Now that we have all settled back into school routines, and learning is well under way again, it is time to re establish home learning as well.

Cute cartoon math symbols Royalty Free Vector ImageThe expectations for our class' home learning are:
Practise basic facts: This term we are practising our times tables. Being able to recall our tables quickly helps solve maths problems efficiently. Focus on 2, 5 and 10 x then the rest.

Reading to someone for at least 10 minutes: This helps with reading for accuracy and fluency. By reading a text more than once we get a better understanding of what we read. Please fill in the date, title of the text and sign each night Monday - Thursday. We have library on Thursdays so the children are encouraged to read their library book on Thursday nights. All reading logs are checked on Friday.

This week: We are making musical instruments on Friday. The children need to bring the materials they need to school by Thursday.

Samoan Language Week

Talofa lava.
Last week we celebrated Samoan Language Week.
Etena and Litiane brought in some artefacts to share with us and we learned some common words and phrases. You too can learn to greet in Samoan by watching this video clip.

We also sang songs and watched some students from Room 6 perform a siva.

Our frangipani artwork is almost finished and will appear in the Artwork page this week.
