Learning About Sound

This afternoon we carried out some investigations about sound. Here is what we did:

1. We played different instruments and worked out how they made their own unique sounds.

2. We made telephones using paper cups and string. They actually work if you keep the string tight.

3. We stretched rubber bands across plastic containers and used glue sticks to create a bridge. By moving the glue stick we created different pitches.

4. We filled containers with different objects to see which made the best shakers.

5. We attached rulers to a piece of string and whirled them around to create a sound similar to the pererehua pictured below.

We also learned about Los Reciclados de Cateura, a community in Paraguay who created instruments from rubbish.
On Friday we will be creating our own instruments out of trash we will be bringing in from home.
