Week 5 - Learning at Home

 28 Hui tanguru

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Over the next five days you will be learning from home again and the Puriri Team teachers have come up with some great learning  activities for you.

You may like to allocate some time each day to:

  • read a book. Record what you have read so we can add it to your reading log if your log is at school.
  • choose 1 or 2 activities from the choice board each day.
  • continue with our 21 Day Challenge. I will post some videos and activities each day for you. Day 12 is below.
  • get some exercise. Go for a walk, bike ride or run with your family or play a game of backyard touch or cricket.
 Choice Board #1
Take a photo of an activity you have completed and send it to me. Don't forget to write a description so I can add it to the blog.

If you would prefer a non digital choice board please email me.

21 Day Challenge

I will be asking you at our Google Meet tomorrow, "How many pieces of plastic did you pick up this weekend?" I picked up 6 so far.

Day 9 - Plastic Pollution

What is the message this video is trying to get across? What did this video make you think or feel?

Sea Cleaners are an amazing organisation who work really hard to keep our waterways clear of rubbish. What else can you do to help?

Google Meets
Every day this week at 10.30 our class will have a meeting. Please bring a pencil or pen and paper with you to the meeting. We will do some maths, some discussion around the 21 Day Challenge, check in on your choice board activities and I will read some of "Bad Dad."
Watch for my email.

Kia kite apopo!

Wow! We are nearly halfway through the term.

Last week we continued with the 21 Day Challenge and thanks to the eager kaitiaki in our class we have now picked up 706 pieces of plastic rubbish in and around our communities. This is fantastic news but also sad that so much plastic could have entered our oceans. These are photos from Louie on two separate occasions.

Congratulations to Joe who earned this week's certificate at the school assembly.

HOME LEARNING:

  • MUST DO -Reading every night for 10 - 15 minutes, either to someone else or to ourselves. Please remember to fill in the reading log to show what has been read.
  • CAN DO - For those children who enjoy inquiring this is for you! Every week will be represented by a new letter eg this week is the letter 'A'. Your task is to find something interesting and unusual that starts with the letter 'A' and be prepared to share some information you found out about it on Friday. You can present your information anyway you want. Some of the 'A' topics from past classes have been avocados, anacondas, the Arctic Circle, ants, and allergies.
THIS WEEK:

Class swimming is on Tuesday and Thursday. All children are expected to bring their togs unless they have a note.

Our Open Morning is this Thursday. Please come along anytime between 8.55 and 10.50am to see what we have been doing and join in with our learning.

Wiki Wha

It has been so good to return to school and see everyone's smiling faces.

We have been trying hard to follow the Level 2 expectations and routines such as sanitising or soap when entering the class.

Unfortunately 3 of our swimming lessons with the coaches have had to be postponed but we did manage to have 2. Here are a few photos from Friday when we got to use the lifejackets.

This week we also started the 21 Day Challenge. You would have seen the two posts from Tuesday and Wednesday. For the next few weeks we will continuing with the challenge, learning about how we can be kaitiaki for the Hauraki Gulf. We will learn about the different creatures that inhabit the moana, the issues they face and how we can help. One of the #1 ways we can be kaitiaki is by picking up rubbish we see on the ground so it doesn't go down the drain and into our harbour. Lots of the class have started picking up rubbish at and around their homes. Each day I will be asking how many pieces of plastic were picked up. Any photos you send will be added to our slideshow I will upload next week. Can you guess who this is picking up rubbish?

On Friday Miss Green visited the class and taught us the Kawa of Care for using our Chromebooks. We have now all signed our contracts and logged onto our Chromebooks with our new passwords. We can't wait to get started on Monday!

Reminders for this week:
  1. Class swimming is on Tuesday & Thursday
  2. Lunchtime swims are on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday
  3. Library is every Thursday
  4. All reading logs are due on Friday for checking
Have a wonderful week,
Ngā mihi

Nga Manu~ Day 3 of The 21 Day Challenge

Look at the pictures of these seabirds. What is the difference between them?

Watch this slideshow and see how many of the seabirds you can name. e.g.Dotterel, Gull, Gannet, Oystercatcher, Kingfisher, Penguin, Black Petrel, Spotted Shag.

Can you match the birds with their calls?

Two more videos you may like to watch about the black petrel:

Can you remember the animals mentioned in the 2 video clips? What is the Maori name for the black petrel? Next time you go fishing what will you do to make sure our seabirds are safe?

Our Learning At Home

This slideshow will be updated daily while we are in Lockdown. You can use the toolbar at the bottom of the slides to pause and enlarge for a better view.

Please make a comment below so we know that you have viewed our work.

Have you ever seen a tohorā / whale?

Today's learning is all about the Bryde's whale and why they are taonga. Click on the photo below to watch the video.

Write down 3 things you learned from this video and bring your information to tomorrow's class meeting.

This next video shows you how to draw a Bryde's whale. Click on the photo to watch.

Keep picking up plastic. I had to walk further along the road today to find another piece. I will be asking you every day how many pieces you picked up so I can add them to our data sheet. Well done Joe!

Have a great afternoon everyone.

21 Day Challenge

This term our class is taking part in the 21 Day Challenge. Click on the photo and watch the first video clip to find out what the 21 Day Challenge is all about.

Your Challenge is to collect at least one piece of plastic rubbish that you find on the footpath, berm or in the gutter outside your house or on your street. Take a photo of it and email it through to me at mmudgway@owairaka.school.nz.

What do you know about the Hauraki Gulf? Have you been on it or under it? Click on the next photo to learn about how special this part of our backyard is.

We are all great kaitiaki at school but the environment we need to care for is all around us. Click on the next photo to watch the video about being a kaitiaki of the Hauraki Gulf.

Here is the rubbish I found this morning that I picked up and put in the bin. What do you think these are from? What did you find?

Don't forget to wash your hands!

Ka kite apopo at our 10.30 Google Meeting,
Maria

Choice Board for Learning at Home

The Puriri teachers have created two choice boards of activities for you to choose from over the next 3 days. Choice Board 1 is non digital which means you do not need access to a digital device for any of the activities. Choice Board 2 is digital and you will need a laptop, phone or chromebook, etc to access the websites. You can pick and choose from both Choice Boards if you like.

Click on the Choice Board #2 image to access the links.

Wiki Rua - Week 2

Week 1 flew by!

We spent our first couple of days learning about each other, our classroom and our school. We will continue with this throughout our second week as well.

Here are a few photos of our Puriri Scoot.

On Saturday was Waitangi Day. We will be learning more about this special day on Tuesday when we return to school. Check your child's bag for their Waitangi Day booklet.

This week we will start using our books. Please label all your child's stationery with their name so it can be returned to them.

Swimming is on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday this week. Our goal is to have everyone swimming. If your child is unable to swim for any reason please contact me. We have extra togs and towels at school for those who forget but any donations are gratefully accepted.

Don't forget to follow our class blog by clicking below.

Ngā mihi.

Welcome to Room 21 for 2021

Nau mai haere mai and welcome to our blog for 2021. I hope you have all had a safe wonderful holiday with your families, I certainly have!

I am looking forward to a very exciting year with my new class! This year's theme is called "In Our Backyard" and this term we will be learning about each other and our local community.

Our blog space is very important as this is where we do a lot of our sharing and communication with our families. I will be posting a blog at least once a week to keep you informed of any upcoming events.

Please feel free to pop into our classroom before and after school to see what we have been doing. Children love to share their learning.

School starts at 8.55am but our class is open from 8.30 every morning. Our stationery list will be sent home tomorrow. We will not begin using our stationery until next week so we can all start in our books at the same time. Please check your child's bag for this important information.

We start swimming this Friday. Swimming is part of our PE curriculum and we encourage all children to bring their togs every day, especially for our instructional sessions. There will be opportunities at lunchtime for a free swim to cool down with their friends during this hot term.

Home learning will focus on reading daily and for those who want more there will be an inquiry each week.

Morning tea and lunch are eaten after each break and we also have a brainsnack at 9.40am for 10 minutes. A healthy lunchbox would be greatly appreciated to help your child keep fueled during the day. We are a water only school and I encourage the children to bring a drink bottle into class so water is easily accessible.

Please label all your child's stationery, togs, towels, lunchbox, drink bottle etc so it can be returned quickly.

My email is mmudgway@owairaka.school.nz. You can send a note or leave a comment below if you have any questions or queries about starting back to school.

I look forward to seeing your amazing tamariki tomorrow morning.

Ngā mihi,

Maria
